Where settlers once discovered the black gold called oil, they now find a land of golden opportunities. Known for its state of the art agriculture, oil and aerospace industries, Kern crops provide the world with food and fiber while its oil and aerospace industries provide the nation with oil and gas and the latest in defense technology.

Kern County has also proven to be a golden opportunity for distribution centers, financial service companies and manufacturers. Over the last several years, companies like IKEA, Target, and Sears have chosen the area for major distribution centers, while State Farm has selected the area for one of two California Regional Offices. The area's strategic location, affordable land, available and affordable labor and quality of life make Kern a gold mine for today's progressive companies. The county's diverse economic base now ranges from high-tech computer aviation companies to state-of-the art manufacturers. 

The Kern Economic Development Corporation was formed in 1988 with the mission of stimulating a diversified and strong economic climate in Kern County. This is accomplished through new business recruitment and assistance with retention and expansion of existing businesses.
