The City of Tehachapi, nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills on top of the crossroads of commercial connectivity, is the “right environment for the right company.” Boasting a family friendly, business growth oriented, comfortably convenient and healthy environment, this mountain community has the feel of a small town with all of the amenities of a big city. Tehachapi is committed to its residents in all areas, from preserving the area’s history to education for the future, from quality of life to business development. Recent major relocations and expansions in the area include American Carriage, Chemtool, Woodward West Sports Camp and Home Depot, all of whom have had overwhelming success with their move to the mountain community. With excellent market access, Tehachapi is primed for new development.
Settlement of the Tehachapi region began in 1854 as settlers began opening up its valleys to farming and ranching operations. The City of Tehachapi, which was incorporated in 1909, is the product of the 1876 linkage of the San Joaquin Valley with the Pueblo of Los Angeles by a rail line leading over the mountain summit and through the Tehachapi Valley, then spilling into the Mojave Desert and across the Antelope Valley.
Population within the Tehachapi City limits is approximately 7,000, with an estimated 40,000 individuals living in the greater Tehachapi region.
While located in Kern County, Tehachapi’s local economy and labor force are linked more directly to the Antelope Valley communities of Palmdale and Lancaster, which have a particularly strong concentration of aerospace related industries. Additionally, the Mojave Airport, located in East Kern, was recently granted an “Inland Space Part” designation with an emerging aerospace cluster within the airport with a particular focus on research and development (RND). Edwards Air Force Base in conjunction with NASA, also located in the east Kern region, has a significant civilian and contractor based labor force with a particular emphasis on aerospace RND for military applications.
These factors make Tehachapi a particularly good location for high tech and aerospace support industries in that there are existing and potential clients and a qualified labor force within reach to meet a businesses’ expansion needs.
Tehachapi is a particularly attractive location for businesses looking to relocate when the business relocation includes the relocation of key personnel. Tehachapi offers a unique quality of life as defined by clean air, four gentle seasons, low crime, quality schools and housing costs that are still relatively affordable and diverse, ranging from urban living to ranch life and everything in between. In this regard Tehachapi is an “easy sell” to existing employees, their spouses and children that need to be factored into a relocation decision.
In addition to the above factors, there are light industrial and commercial parcels available in several business parks with an array of sizes and configurations to accommodate a variety of businesses and industries.
